Have you ever been absolutely positively completely terrified to get up and talk in front of a group of people? What about to give a speech or presentation? Because I know I have been! Getting up and talking in front of people is nerve racking! And guess what? We’re not alone. It’s estimated that 75% of the U.S. population also suffers from “speech anxiety.”
So… how do you get over speech anxiety? Relax, take a few deep breaths, and just do it! Public speaking is something that becomes easier with time and practice. When I first starting giving speeches in high school and college, I would literally shake. Still – the more often I got up to give them, the less shaky I would be.
As the Young & Free spokester, it's in my job description to give presentations. So my favorite boss Sue had me sign up for Toastmasters here at Michigan First Credit Union. Toastmasters is actually an international organization, helping people to become better public speakers. It’s for people at all levels of public speaking, whether you've never given a speech before or if you just want to build on already acquired skills. Toastmasters helps me so much with public speaking. Not to mention, it helps me feel comfortable, as I’m surrounded by a group of friends who are working on their public speaking skills too. I've been going there for about half a year and I can already see myself improving.
