Miss Michigan Scholarship Pageant 2014

What's up Young & Free Michigan!?

It's Trending Tuesday. What's trending now in Michigan? The Miss Michigan Pageant!

This weekend I had the privilege of attending the final night of the 2014 Miss Michigan Scholarship Pageant.

I met tons of really phenomenal people and had a great time.

During the pageant my nerves were high, and I wasn't even a contestant! I just got so nervous for the girls because I knew they worked hard and all wanted to win, but there could only be one winner.

This year 21 year old, Miss Washtenaw County, Katlyn aka, KT Maviglia was crowned Miss Michigan!

With her title, crown and sash, she also received $10,000 in scholarship money and will compete in the Miss America competition in September of this year.

KT has a strong platform, LISTEN UP, which is all about standing up for those with hearing disabilities and aiming to improve services and insurance coverage for children with hearing loss. This is extremely important to KT because when she was in the fourth grade she was diagnosed with Sensorineural Hearing Loss and currently has two hearing aids. Clearly that did not hold her back from reaching for her goals and making a difference!

KT is an inspiration and proof that tough situations should not be used as an excuse but they should be used to become stronger, more courageous and victorious; not to mention her perseverance! This was her third time competing in the Miss Michigan Competition!

I had the opportunity to briefly speak with KT and some of the other contestants, (local title holders) at the pageant's after glow party. (Seen in photos)

She was extremely graceful and although KT was being bombarded with pictures and questions, she made everyone she spoke with, including me, feel important. I told her about the Young & Free program and the empowering financial education that Michigan First believes in. She found it to be very interesting and was excited to hear how passionate Michigan First is about financial education.

KT,  Miss Michigan, it was a pleasure meeting you and I know you will do an awesome job at the Miss America Pageant in September! Keep your spirits up, your standards strong and your attitude focused! Michigan has your back!

So, Young & Free Michigan, be a BIG dreamer and be a goal chaser! Remember that you are capable of more than you think and with determination you will be a success!

Congrats to everyone who competed in the Miss Michigan Scholarship Pageant! Making it that far was a major accomplishment.
