Flu season is at its PEAK, and it's REALLY serious. Health officials recently reported that THREE young adults have died from the flu in Oakland County. The adults were 23, 25 and 29 years old. It’s very rare for young adults to pass away because of the flu, but according to an interview on ABC news, young adults are at VERY high risk for the current strand of flu going around called H1N1.
Here are a few preventative measures you can use to fight off the flu and keep yourself safe:
WASH YOUR HANDS
I know you probably heard this one like crazy growing up, but it’s an important part to keeping ourselves healthy, clean and flu-free. Our hands really do hold a lot of germs, and if those germs remain on our hands, they’re bound to find a way into our bodies. So sing yourself some “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star,” get some soap and warm water, and start scrubbing!
GET MORE SLEEP
According to Mayo Clinic, “Studies show that people who don't get quality sleep or enough sleep are more likely to get sick after being exposed to a virus, such as the common cold.” Long story short, your body needs sleep in order to protect it’s immune system and to fight off viruses. So get a good amount of sleep; eight hours is suburb.
GET YOUR SHARE OF FRUITS & VEGGIES
Seriously guys – there are a lot of antioxidants in fruits and vegetables that will defend your body’s immune system. Remember, the brighter the color of the fruit or veggie, the higher the antioxidants. Check out this list of the foods with the HIGHEST antioxidant count.
And when you are feeling sick, I urge you NOT to feel invincible, and make sure you go to the doctor! The flu is REALLY dangerous this year, and we’re all at risk.
Stay happy and healthy everyone :)
