DIY: Gift in a Jar #1

Christmas shopping is as most of us know, somewhat expensive. It can also be tough choosing the right gift for the right person. Rather than spending TONS of money this Christmas, worrying about what to get for whom, you can always make “a gift in a jar.”

What is a gift in a jar? It’s all of the dry ingredients of a recipe put into a jar.

Throughout the month of December, I will post one gift in a jar per week.  These recipes would make an awesome present for ANYONE, plus they won’t break the bank. Decorating the jar is also a lot of fun; you can customize it for the person you’re giving it to :)

The first gift in a jar shall be:

Pleasing Pasta Soup Mix

  • 1 ¾ cups of small shell macaroni/other small pasta
  • ¾ cup of dried lentils
  • ¾ cup of dried chopped mushrooms
  • ½ cup of Parmesan cheese
  • 3 ½ tablespoons of minces onion
  • 3 ½ tablespoons of chicken bouillon granules
  • 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon of dried parsley flakes
  • 1 ¾ teaspoons of dried oregano
  • 1/8 teaspoon of garlic powder

Layer the above ingredients in the order given into a wide-mouth 1-quart canning jar (a mason jar.)  Pack each layer in place before adding the next layer of ingredient.

After you've stuffed and decorated your jar, attach a gift tag with the following cooking directions:

  • 1 Jar Pleasing Pasta Soup Mix
  • 1 can chicken, optional
  • 10 ½ cups of water

Place water in large soup pot and bring to a boil. Add Pleasing Pasta Soup Mix, and if desired, chicken. Reduce heat, cover and simmer for 40 minutes or until lentils are tender, stirring occasionally.

Wha-la! Your "Pleasing Pasta Soup" gift in a jar is complete. This gift should keep for at least 6 months, so it has awhile until it expires!

Stay tuned for next week's gift in a jar,

Vicky :)
