As students we juggle a lot: sports, academics, work, and personal lives; we’ve got a lot going on! In order to have a well-balanced life, we have to develop some type of routine for ourselves or else something gets lost in the sauce. So, how exactly do you start a daily routine you ask?
First: Watch Yourself
Take a day out to record all of the things you do on a daily basis. Start from the moment you open your eyes to the moment you shut them.
Second: Cut the Crap
After you have the list of daily activities cut the ones that are unnecessary. If it doesn't add to you or make you better cut it!
Now that you've trimmed the fat, organize your tasks. See which tasks are the most challenging and take up the most time and schedule those tasks between 10:00 a.m. - 2:00p.m. as this is peak productivity time for most people. Schedule your creative projects from 2:00pm-6:00pm. Then, use the time from 6:00 p.m.- 10:00 p.m. to wind down, study, and prep for bed.
Four: Fuel the Fire
Be sure to eat three times a day and snack on healthy things like nuts or a smoothie to keep your energy up.
Five: Make Time for Breaks
When you're scheduling your day make time for personal breaks so that you can refresh your mind. You can listen to music, watch your favorite shows for a hour or so, or hang out with friends and family.
Six: Stay Away from Distractions
It seems like whenever we have a plan in place something fun comes out of nowhere and spoils our plans. This will happen often but you have to stick to your routine. If someone spontaneously asks you to come along to the cafe or go to a game when you know you've schedule something important, don't do it!
Seven: Be Proactive
Plan for the next day before it happens. Layout your clothes the night before it'll save you plenty of time in the morning. Also before you go to bed make a list of all the task you need to take care of in the morning. It'll help you sleep better and provide you with a road map for the next day.
Eight: Get Enough Sleep
If you find yourself missing out on sleep to get things done then you should consider reworking your schedule. Sleep is so important despite what some "go-getters" say. There is this no pain, no gain mentality that people have towards success that can be really unhealthy. Make sure you get some rest guys. Also, turn off the TV and put the phone up when it's bedtime. I know if I'm scrolling like a zombie I may think I'm resting, but the blue light from your laptop and phone keep you up and causes fatigue. Know that when it's time to rest, you need to truly get some rest.
Life can become overwhelming at times but when you take a minute to look at the tasks ahead and make them work for you things become a lot easier. I hope this helps! If you have any suggestions on how to be more productive please comment below. Follow me on social @YoungFreeMI.
