“The reality of gun ownership may be different for hunters in rural Ohio than for those plagued by gang violence in Cleveland, but don’t tell me we can’t uphold the second amendment while keeping AK-47’s out of the hands of criminals”– Barack Obama.
What invention do you think the world would be better off without and why?
GUNS are the invention I think the world would be better off without and here’s why.
11,385. This is how many people died on average annually in firearm incidents in the US between 2001 and 2011. The firearm was invented in China during the 13th century AD, they were called “Hand-Cannons”. They were originally invented for sport or hunting. Guns have evolved over the years and they are easy to get ahold of. One in Three US citizens have possession of a firearm, legally. But what if it was never invented? Even though there are some benefits to guns, they do not outweigh the deficits. In today’s world, being a young man of color means that I cannot trust everyone and most people do not have my best interest at heart. In general, black Americans are killed by guns at 12 times the rate of people in other developed countries according to the newspaper FiveThirtyEight (June 18, 2015). We cannot even trust the police because of all of the killings that have happened to unarmed innocent men. Young black men were nine times more likely than other Americans to be killed by police officers in 2015, according to the Guardian Study. This gives people a “shoot first ask questions last” mentality because people would rather be on the other side of the gun. Tens of thousands of families feel the effects of guns, whether it’s from war, gang related activity, or even being at the wrong place at the wrong time, and worst of all, having the wrong color of skin. Even I have felt the pain of a family member being killed from a gun related incident. This would be a better, safer world without guns. I would much rather die of old age than staring down the barrel of a gun that was invented in the 13th century for hunting and sport.
