Halley’s Situation

Hi! My name is Halley and I attend Albion College. Last semester I studied abroad in Ireland for four months and it was the best experience of my life and I could not have made a better decision. It made me realize how much how I love to travel and how independent I can be. I live life to the fullest and am excited about every new opportunity to come. I look forward to graduating college and seeing what the world has to offer!

What is a credit union? How can I benefit from it? Why do I need a credit union? I’m young!
These are some of the questions and thoughts of “our generation.” Well, if you think you are set for life, (which, in reality, none of us are) then good for you. For those of you who plan for the today and the future, Read on:

A credit union’s mission is to be ‘community oriented’ and to ‘serve people, not profit.’ Credit unions offer several services banks do including credit and savings accounts, CD’s, online banking, as well as credit cards.

Though credit unions and banks offer similar services, customers tend to be more satisfied with credit unions. These types of financial institutions choose not to maximize their profits, but instead to serve their members; hence the statement, ‘serve people, not profit’. Credit unions have competitive rates and fees. Their members usually have higher returns on savings, fewer fees, as well as lower rates on loans. Who doesn't want to save money and have a bank that cares about YOU! Maybe not the some, but, I bet when they crash into reality, they’ll turn to a credit union to get them out of debt and turn into living for today and the future!

Once you decide to live for today and the future, how do you choose a credit union? That’s an easy one to answer: Michigan First Credit Union! This awesome credit union has opportunities for everyone and has longevity. Michigan First Credit Union was established in 1926. Back then, it was called The Detroit Teachers Credit Unions. Later in the 1940’s, it became the largest Teachers Credit Union in Detroit.

The Detroit Teachers Credit Union did not stop there. A decade later, it was the largest credit union in the world. The Detroit Teachers Credit Union kept expanding to different parts of Detroit as well as surrounding cities until 2001. As everyone can see, it grew out of its name hence; the name Michigan First Credit Union.

Okay, you know it was around for your great grandparents, but, that does not mean it is for you, the young and free, wrong! Michigan First Credit Union has a rewards program called Money Perks. The more points received, the better loan rate opportunities you will have. Your loan can be reduced up to .75 percent and a service rate can be waived, simply put, the more money you are able to save, the happier you’ll be. “But wait, that’s not all”: The Michigan First Credit Union has a great overdraft program, complete with savings transfer and line of credit.
